Valparaiso

Valparaiso -a spectacular setting, basically just a set of big hills coming out of the sea with a brightly coloured city clinging to the sides. In the distance you can see the snow capped Andes. You can just see mt Aconcagua at 7000 meters the highest in S america in the distance, which is in Argentina. A lot of the town is decaying and decrepid -compared to how it once must have been in its wealthy heyday- but is full of hustle and bustle and after the initial culture shock it has a charm that sort of creeps up on you. - and a seemingly endless selection of dingy bars and clubs that are open all night. Much like in Spain people dont eat until late and then start to head down to el plan, the old part of town sometime after midnight. Bars are open till sunrise. Afterwards people gravitate to the seafood cafes for some seafood soup -the sort of Chileian equivalent of a fry-up. It comes in a huge bowl with all sorts of bits and a poached egg floating on top. Very nice. If you are feeling really adventureous you can have a huge plate of raw seafood which seems to be very popular but which I was too scared to try...
